Keep your eyes peeled and needles at the ready…Frank is almost here!!!!!
The GirlGoneLoopy Etsy Shop is having it’s End of Summer Sale – now through September 22nd, 10% off select yarns!
Ever have a project that keeps giving you fits then all of a sudden you have an “Ah-HA” moment..??
Yeah…that’s been me with Frank, we’ve been fighting a bit lately.
I had yet another bad start….which I really thought was gonna be perfect until all of a sudden it wasn’t. UGH!! There may have been a few cuss words and some pulling of hair involved with the realization that it just wasn’t right….again. ::sigh::
So I sat down with pen and paper and started to sketch (yes, I know I should have done that FIRST) and found my shape…kinda like a pill box hat. Brilliant. It will give me that flat top look I’m looking for here. So Frank has taken on a slightly adapted pill box sorta shape… He’s gonna be just fine…cool even!! I can’t wait to finish him… So much so that I am kinda ticked off I actually have to work today!! But, I should have him done this weekend… Photo’s soon!!!!!
So, do you like my new look?? Decided it was time for a change. How about that glorious photo of my mitt pattern, Namaste’!?! The photo was taken by none other than the genius dyer of the yarn the mitts use!!! Go check out her site, Kama Suutra Fiber Arts…she does amazing things with color… Oh, and pick up a kit for the mitts while you’re at it!! ; )
Happy Weekend…do something spontaneous!!!
I’m not a prolific knitter. I don’t churn out tons of glorious knits…and yet, I knit ALL THE TIME… What am I doing, if not finishing one wonderful object after another? I’m a technique junkie. I would happily knit swatches all day long, if I were learning new techniques. I’m what you call a “process” knitter, as apposed to a “finished object” knitter.
I have been this way since the beginning of my crafting life…not just with knitting. As soon as I have a technique down, I’m ready for something new…whether the project is done or not. Let’s just say my UFO pile is unseemly…scary, even…and a bit depressing. I’ve started lately to feel the weight of that pile…and started to feel very unsatisfied with it.
A few years ago I started getting involved with swaps…lots of them…a mind-numbing number of them. I found, after the first few, that they were helping me FINISH projects. I had to…no choice. I was committed and there was no looking back. These swaps helped me to see the value and joy in a finished piece… So, I kept joining them, then more and more… Then they started to make me sad…because all these wonderful things I was finishing were being sent away…to complete strangers…never to be seen by me again.
I’ve come to the end of my swapping life…mostly because I’m about to become insanely busy (and broke) with school (19 days!!!). But also because I am starting, finally, to feel the need to KEEP something I’ve made. To make something just for me…and not some quick little pair of hand warmers…but THINGS…for ME… What a wondrous concept!! To knit for myself. Huh. I’ve finally started to see the appeal in that. Not that I’ve never worked on anything meant for me…but I have rarely finished anything meant for me. (note aforementioned UFO pile, ahem)
So…have I started anything just for me??? Yes.
Do I plan on finishing it?????? Yes.
Well, what is it, for Pete’s sake?? (have you ever wondered who, exactly “Pete” is?)
I am working on the Limestone One Skein Shawl, by Michelle Miller. (I”ll link it later, go search it on Ravelry for now) It’s a lovely, easy to work pattern. I am ready to start the 5th repeat of the body chart (there are 8 repeats) and I every time I have to put it down, I pout. I NEED to knit on this… I NEED to finish it…
What makes it even better is I am using Sanguine Gryphon, Skinny Bugga! in “Frog-Legged Leaf Beetle“. It is LUSH!!!! I can’t sing the praises of Sanguine Gryphon enough… I mean, think about it…it’s indie hand-dyed yarn… I AM an indie hand-dyer… I don’t buy other hand-dyes often…but I will plunk down money for their yarn anytime I am able…and do so with a fevered relish. THEY ROCK THE DYE POT!! They are worth every cent you will pay for them. Seriously.
I don’t have a photo yet…but I’ll snap one this weekend and post it. I don’t post enough photo’s. Blogs are kinda boring without the eye candy, don’t you think??
That’s what I have left until school starts… 25 days…it seems like nothing and SO LONG at the same time. As my last post stated, I have a ton I would like to get done before school starts and only 25 days to get it done in. UGH!! I also have to freaking wait a whole 25 days until school starts!! UGH!!
See what I mean?
I’m struggling here lately, on the knitting front. I have these things that I NEED to do which is vastly different from what I WANT to do. After these NEEDS are done… It’s gonna be a whole lotta WANT for a long while…at least until school is done. I will have precious little crafty time and I ain’t making nothing I don’t want to. : )
I think one thing that is gonna be at the top of my WANT list is a sweater for myself. I have a sweater’s quantity of Brooks Farm Mas Acero in a lush, snappy grass green that will just make you swoon it’s so lovely. I haven’t decided on a pattern yet… But I have 1600 yards of loveliness to use!!! Tho… I may stick to small, easy, portable knits while in school. Projects I can pick up and knit a few rows on here and there. I think my brain will be pretty much occupied with school stuff, work and lack of sleep and I will just need some serious brainless knitting. I may lose my mind with the dullness of it, but at least I will have things that I will actually finish…maybe. ; )
I’ve been spending some time lately reading the blog of one of my favorite designers, Jared Flood . I’ve been following the new version of the blog for a while now, but I decided to go back to the beginning and start reading from the oldest entry… I’m almost done with the second year of the blog…I am stunned in what a short time frame he went from what seems like a relatively new-ish knitter to a awesome, inspiring, fresh, hip designer (no, I don’t like him at all..can you tell??) ; ) And now even has his own freaking yarn line, Shelter Wool ! I am so very impressed by his talent and growth over the short five years since he started the blog. I hope to accomplish as much some day. For now, I will collect all my ideas and keep dreaming!
Speaking of designers…my top fave’s (at this moment), in no order…
There are, of course, a million others…but these seem to be catching my eye in a very good way…especially Mercedes… I have yet to see something she has designed that I don’t want, NEED, to knit….hmm….perhaps her Girl Friday will be the answer to my Brooks Farm yarn!!
So…it’s been awhile since I’ve posted more than one line or so… What’s up, you ask?
I haven’t dyed anything since January… Life has been super busy. I have set aside some time the last weekend of this month to dye up the remainder of my undyed yarn…and if I have time, some roving. After that, the dyeing will be on hiatus for a while…and/or happen very sporadically for a good chunk of months (see Life Update for reason). I will be trying to keep small crafty bits in the shop during the hiatus, just to keep things going. Look for stitch markers, jewelry, hair accessories and other little bits in the coming months.
Vest: The vest pattern is currently being written up (by me) albeit, slowly and will then be making its way into the hands of test knitters. I do not have a release date for it yet, but I will keep you updated. I would love to show you photo’s but that has to wait… What I can tell you it is a wonderful, simple-to-work, lots of bang for your buck multi-color slip stitch pattern. Love it!!
Frank Hat: My friend Erin, over at Fiberolio, has charged me with the task of writing a pattern for a Frankenstein-stlye topper, out of her lovely hand-spun yarn, due for release before Halloween…again, no date yet, but I’ll keep you updated.
Personal Knitting: I’ve been working on a few things, but most of them are for other people…in that I am in two Traveling Shawl Groups right now (one knitting, one crochet) so that has been keeping me busy. I have also made a few baby items for a friend who is due to pop in August!! (Yay!! Baby!!! One that I can give back!! Double YAY!!) The shawl I mentioned a few posts ago has been patiently waiting for me to have the time to concentrate on it again…my mind has been jelly lately…and it’s a tough lace pattern. I am about to pull out Avery’s cardigan again, I’ve promised it to him by the time it gets cold enough to wear it and I plan on making good on that. (Keep your fingers crossed for me on that one!!)
So…what’s really up with me?? I’ve decided, after 20 years of dragging my feet, to go to Cosmetology school. I’ve looked into it several times since high school and just never done it…even tho I was pretty sure I’d be happy and be good at it. Now…now it the time! I took the plunge and got myself registered and enrolled and classes start August 22nd. For the next 20 months my life is gonna be INSANE. I will work full-time days and attend school Mon-Thurs, evenings. It will be worth it…I can feel it….but I can also feel the exhaustion that headed my way, as well. Wish me luck!!
Speaking of going for it…is there anything that you’ve always wanted to do?????? GO FOR IT!!!!!
Inspired by a dear friend who is currently decorating her nursery for the impending arrival of Lil’ Miss Awesomeness… I have revisited my love for Dr. Seuss.
My favorite quote:
Today you are you.
That is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is youer than you.
Wise words there.
Now, for knitting news!
Currently on hold. A few issues have popped up and are being dealt with, but until things are worked out…it’s been tabled. Eventually, one way or another, it will be completed and released.
Other pattern writing adventures
I’ve recently been approached by my friend Erin over at Fiberolio to work up a few patterns for her handspun wonder yarns!! I’m excited about the prospect of working with some amazing handspun! Go get yourself some, she does awesome, soft, squishy, fluffy wonderous work!!!! www.fiberolio.com
I have had the idea of a cardigan that has been running around my head for ages and no time to work on it…but, soon…very, very soon… It will involve: fingering and lace weight yarns, perhaps some worsted if I’m feeling frisky; interesting shaping, lace work and other fun stuff!! I have yet to decide on which yarns I will be using…but I have one company in mind…we shall see!!!
I have decided that I have been doing not enough knitting for myself. 99% of what I have been working on for the past 2+ years has been for other people and I have needs, too, dammitall!!!! So…I am currently working on two selfish profects.
One, the Dream In Color Shrug, using DIC Classy in the Black Parade colorway… GORGEOUS. I cannot wait until it’s done. I love the pattern and I love the yarn and I love the color!!
The other, Lazy Lara shawl…in an amazing teal semi-solid from Sanguine Gryphon, in their new lace weight yarn, Mithril…colorway called Bottled Imp. Makes me swoon it’s so gorgeous…the sheer depth of color blows your mind. The pattern is wonderful!! Challenging enough to hold my interest but not so hard that I want to poke my eyes out. It is fantastic and about 85% done!!! I can’t wait!!
A note about my new favorite yarn…
I have been hearing about Sanguine Gryphon yarn for a while now…and when I found out they were going to be at Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival this year… I had to see what the fuss was all about. Yeah…WOW. Mostly semi-solid colors, but since semi-solid is my new favorite thing ever… I was in heaven!!!! I got a skein of Mithril (lace) in Bottled Imp and 2 skeins of Skinny Bugga (fingering) in Tomato Frog (a to die for RED)…and wish like hell I had picked up more….but that is what the website is for!! If you have not tried Sanguine Gryphon’s yarn…GO GET SOME NOW!!!!! No, I mean it…NOW!!! www.sanguinegryphon.com
That’s all for now…
Until next time…have happiness!!!
